Vulture capitalists are investors who invest in distressed companies in hopes that their recovery or liquidation will bring them gains.
Although the founders of Betrand&Earnest were initially pleased that the vulture capitalist saved their firm from bankruptcy, they were dismayed when he took over a controlling share and began planning to sell off company assets.
Investments in such failing companies come with relatively high risks but potentially high returns, as well. The term vulture capitalist is also used derogatorily for venture capitalists who take control of a startup away from the founders in order to extract short-term profits.
