Retail category killers (a form of big-box store) generally gain competitive advantages over other companies by using their large size to achieve economies of scale and offer goods at lower prices or to offer a wider range of goods than is possible in more specialized stores. The term has also been applied in other areas, such as to the online auction site eBay, which used its size to drive some competitors out of the market.
