A bad debt is an account receivable that cannot be collected and hence is written off as an expense by the creditor.
Due to the recession and the large number of bankruptcies it is causing, the banking sector will remain heavily burdened with bad debts.
Bad debts frequently result from a debtor’s declaring bankruptcy and thus rendering his or her debt uncollectable. There are many other reasons, though, for why a creditor may not be able to collect a debt. The term “deadbeat” is often used for a customer or borrower who habitually is a source of bad debts. Most firms make accounting allowances for bad debts, as it is unlikely that all debts will be paid in full by all debtors. A bad debt is also termed an uncollectible account.
Kvůli recesi a jí způsobenému velkému počtu bankrotů, zůstane nadále bankovní sektor výrazně zatížen nedobytnými pohledávkami.
