Zero waste is a concept aiming for no waste being burnt, sent to landfills, or otherwise disposed of in our natural environment.

Comment

Zero waste has recently become a popular concept, political program, and for some people even a lifestyle that results in nothing to dump. Policies working with this concept usually emphasize circular economy, whereby entire production and distribution chains as well as waste management systems are restructured in ways that significantly reduce the amounts of waste produced and so that such waste that nevertheless is produced is reused or recycled. Ultimately, then, nothing (or just very little) is left to be disposed of. Among other benefits, this should contribute to conserving resources, eliminating pollution, and mitigating the consequences of global warming.

Zero waste nebo-li nulový odpad je koncept, jehož cílem je, aby se žádný odpad nespaloval, neukládal na skládky ani se jinak nezanechával v přírodním prostředí.

Evropská komise ve svém sdělení Evropskému parlamentu jasně uvedla, že ekonomika stavějící na principu „vzít, vyrobit, spotřebovat a vyhodit“ ohrožuje konkurenceschopnost EU, a proto se je nutné vydat se cestou zero waste.

Poznámka

Zero waste se v poslední době stal populárním konceptem, politickým programem a pro některé i životním stylem, na jehož konci není co vyhodit. Politiky, které s tímto konceptem pracují, obvykle kladou důraz na oběhové hospodářství, ve kterém jsou celé výrobní a distribuční řetězce a systémy nakládání s odpady restrukturalizovány tak, aby se výrazně snížilo množství produkovaného odpadu a aby se odpad, který přesto vznikne, znovu použil nebo recykloval a nic (nebo jen velmi málo) zůstalo k likvidaci. To by mělo mimo jiné přispět k ochraně přírodních zdrojů, eliminaci znečištění a zmírnění důsledků globálního oteplování.
