An underlying asset is the asset the price of which forms the basis for calculating the price of a derivative or asset-backed security.

Also referred to as just the underlying, it may take the form of various types of assets. For example, a stock for stock options, a commodity for wheat futures, a currency for currency swaps, and even another derivative in the case of an option on stock index futures.
