Thinly traded stock /

Tence obchodované akcie

Business Term of the Day

Definition

A thinly traded stock is one that has a low traded volume and/or wide bid–ask spread and therefore cannot be easily bought or sold without significant change in price.

Example sentence

Peter was considering buying shares of the ThinAir travel company, but he changed his mind after finding out it is a thinly traded stock with only 2,468 shares changing hands in the past week.

Comment

A thinly traded stock (or other security) is characterized by a very small number of interested buyers and/or sellers, which means that the bid–ask spread is wide. Since for every buyer there must be a seller and vice versa, it is typically difficult to buy or sell a stock traded in low volumes. The thinly traded stock is, therefore, illiquid and thus bears a high level of liquidity risk. Its share price may also be highly volatile, which means that any transaction of substantial size goes hand in hand with significant change in price. Such stocks or other securities typically (but not always) are traded in over-the-counter markets. A thinly traded stock might be suitable as a long-term investment, but it is not recommended for active trading or speculating.

Definice
