The concept of sustainable development is applied in many areas, from environmental protection and the extraction of raw materials to policymaking and even marketing. Many companies have adopted sustainable development as a guiding principle for their operations. Nevertheless, some companies knowingly promote an adherence to sustainable development despite their failure to do so in reality. Such practice is referred to as greenwashing.

Koncept trvale udržitelného rozvoje se používá v mnoha oblastech od ochrany životních prostředí a těžby surovin až po tvorbu pravidel a marketing. Řada společností přijala trvale udržitelný rozvoj jako základní princip svého provozu. Některé společnosti ale vědomě propagují dodržování trvale udržitelného rozvoje aniž by to ve skutečnosti dělaly. Taková praxe se nazývá natírání na zeleno.
