Definition
A subpoena is a court order demanding physical evidence or appearance at court to provide testimony.
Example sentence
When the suspect eventually named several people, he was told he could be comforted by the fact that all of them were already under subpoena to appear.
Comment
Failure to comply with a subpoena results in a penalty (the Latin sub poena literally means under penalty). An order to present evidence is termed a subpoena duces tecum, while a subpoena ad testificandum summons the recipient to appear in court to provide testimony.
Definice
