A strike is an organized refusal to work that is arranged to protest about certain policies or issues.
During the Velvet Revolution, a two-hour general strike was organized.
Strikes (also called strike actions) are usually organized by unions and generally directed against the activities or practices of a particular employer or group of employers, although they can also be targeted against the state or institutions (such as a university). Strikes can take various forms – from simple work stoppage to lock-ins, sit-downs, and walkouts. A general strike is a mass protest by a significant number of workers from a broad segment of the economy within a region or country. A person who continues to work (or is brought in by a company’s management or owners to work) during a strike is called a strikebreaker.
Stávka je organizované odmítnutí pracovat pořádané coby protest týkající se určitých opatření nebo témat.
Během sametové revoluce byla zorganizována dvouhodinová generální stávka.
Stávky jsou obvykle organizovány odbory a obecně jsou zaměřeny proti činnosti nebo praktikám určitého zaměstnavatele nebo skupiny zaměstnavatelů. Mohou však být také namířeny proti státu nebo institucím (například univerzitě). Stávky mohou mít mnoho podob – od prosté výluky přes zablokování či blokace, demonstrativní opuštění pracoviště apod. Generální stávka je masový protest značného počtu pracovníků v širokém segmentu ekonomiky v určité oblasti nebo zemi. Osoba, která během stávky pokračuje v práci (nebo ji k práci přiveze vedení nebo vlastníci společnosti) se nazývá stávkokaz.
