The Schengen Agreement is a treaty signed in 1985 upon the basis of which border checks between countries within the EU were gradually eliminated.
At the time of the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU, the Schengen Agreement was already a part of European Union Law and therefore it was not necessary to sign the Schengen Treaty separately.
The original Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985 by Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. It took another 10 years, until border checks between these states were actually removed. In 1999, the Schengen Agreement became a part of European Union Law through the Treaty of Amsterdam. The Schengen Agreement also gave its name to the so-called Schengen Area, which includes today 26 European states that removed all controls on their mutual borders. One of the most important conditions for joining the Schengen Area is to accept responsibility for maintaining and protecting the external EU border.
