Rolling highway is a form of intermodal transport utilizing railroads to carry large numbers of trucks and/or trailers, thereby replacing or complementing a highway.
In a pioneering move, the government decided to fund a rolling highway program to promote competitiveness and reduce environmental impacts of freight transportation.
As with other forms of intermodal transport, the combination of trucks and trains exploits the advantages of both forms of transport (high efficiency of railroads and flexibility of road transportation) while offsetting their disadvantages (limited flexibility of railroads and low efficiency and strong environmental impacts of trucks). In most cases, only the trailers are transported, as transporting the trucks (tractors) themselves is inefficient. Rolling highways also have an advantage over transportation of simpler containers in terms of their easier transshipment.
Autovlak je forma intermodální dopravy, která využívá železnici pro přepravu velkého množství nákladních vozů anebo přívěsů, a tím nahrazuje nebo doplňuje dálnici.
Stát podnikl průkopnický krok a rozhodl se financovat program autovlaků, aby podpořil konkurenceschopnost a snížil dopady nákladní dopravy na životní prostředí.
Stejně jako ostatní formy intermodální dopravy, tato kombinace nákladních automobilů a vlaků využívá výhod obou druhů přepravy (vysokou efektivitu železnice a flexibilitu silniční dopravy) a zároveň kompenzuje jejich nevýhody (omezenou flexibilitu železnice a nízkou efektivitu nákladní dopravy a její vážné dopady na životní prostředí). Ve většině případů se přepravují jen návěsy, jelikož přepravovat tahače není efektivní. Autovlaky také mají výhodu oproti přepravě jednodušších kontejnerů ve snadnější překládce.
