A public utility company is an enterprise controlled or closely regulated by government authority at some level providing services in the public interest, typically in an area of infrastructure.
Although originally postal services were in many countries government-owned public utility companies with characteristics of a monopoly, today this is a highly competitive field where many private companies offer their services.
Traditionally, public utility companies were supplying essential goods and services such as electricity, water, gas, postal and telephone services, as well as maintaining related infrastructure. These companies were mostly natural monopolies. Today, in many areas infrastructure is detached from the provided service so people may choose a provider of, for instance, electricity or telecommunication services. Public utility companies may be owned and run publicly or privately. In either case, are closely regulated because there is a public interest in having stable, reliable, and universally accessible infrastructure and related services.
Podniky veřejných služeb tradičně dodávaly nepostradatelné zboží a služby jako elektřina, voda, plyn, poštovní a telefonní služby a udržovaly i související infrastrukturu.
