A progressive tax is a tax the rate of which increases for persons or entities with a greater taxable amount.

Comment

Progressive taxation is common for income taxes, where higher tax rates apply for persons or entities with higher incomes while lower-income taxpayers have relatively lower tax burdens. Although progressive taxation is intended to reduce the effects of income inequality, opponents have argued that poorly designed tax rate progression may discourage taxpayers from trying to improve their incomes and may motivate the rich toward tax evasion. In contrast to a progressive tax, a proportionate or flat tax applies the same rate to everyone, and a regressive tax has tax rates that are actually lower for increasingly larger taxable amounts.

Poznámka

Progresivní daň je běžná pro daně z příjmu, kde vyšší daňové sazby platí pro osoby s vyšším příjmem, zatímco nízkopříjmoví plátci daně mají relativně nižší daňovou zátěž. Ačkoli progresivní zdanění má snižovat dopady příjmové nerovnosti, odpůrci argumentují, že špatně nastavená daňová progrese může odradit plátce daně od zvyšování příjmu a může bohaté motivovat k daňovým únikům. Na rozdíl od progresivní daně má rovná daň stejnou sazbu pro všechny, a regresivní daň má dokonce sazbu, která je nižší pro vyšší zdanitelné částky.
