Comment

In natural environments, monoculture (i.e., just one plant growing on a large piece of land) is almost never to be seen. Polyculture farming therefore can be considered as a way of imitating natural diversity by growing together crops supporting one another. This can result in greater resilience to pests and diseases as well as better weed control. Other benefits include greater resistance to soil erosion and lower contamination of groundwater and surface waters by fertilizer and chemical residues. For these reasons, polyculture farming also can be more sustainable. On the other hand, monocultures still prevail in commercial farming because they are easier to care for through mechanization and application of chemicals while bringing higher yields.

Poznámka

V přírodním prostředí se s monokulturou (tj. pouze jednou rostlinou rostoucí na velkém prostoru) v podstatě nesetkáme. Polykulturní zemědělství lze proto považovat za způsob, jak napodobit přírodní rozmanitost tím, že se společně pěstují plodiny, které se navzájem podporují, což může vést k větší odolnosti vůči škůdcům, chorobám i lepšímu potlačování plevelů. Mezi další výhody patří větší odolnost půdy vůči erozi a nižší kontaminace povrchových i podzemních vod zbytky z chemie a hnojiv. Proto může být polykulturní hospodaření také udržitelnější. Na druhé straně v komerčním zemědělství stále převažují monokultury, protože je snazší o ně pečovat pomocí mechanizace a aplikace chemických látek a zároveň přinášejí vyšší výnosy.
