Perpetual bond /

Věčný dluhopis

Business Term of the Day

Definition

A perpetual bond is a type of bond with an infinite maturity.

Example sentence

Even though some commentators had warned investors that MegaBank’s position is not as stable as commonly perceived, the bank successfully issued new perpetual bonds to satisfy its capital requirements.

Comment

Perpetual bonds are also referred to as perps or consols. Because there is no maturity date on a perpetual bond, the principal will never be repaid. Instead, the investor receives the coupon perpetually for as long as the issuer is able to pay or until the investor sells the bond to someone else. As one might expect, perpetual bonds are rather rare and are only sold by highly reputable issuers such as the UK and U.S. governments.

Definice
