An oligopsony is a form of market wherein only a few large buyers exist for a product or service.
The association of small farmers has protested against the oligopsony of super- and hypermarkets and the conditions they impose in buying produce.
An oligopsony constitutes a form of imperfect competition. It contrasts with an oligopoly, in which there are many buyers but just a few sellers. Buyers in an oligopsony have a major advantage in that they can exert considerable control over sellers. Consequently, this market form often is characterized by strong downward pressure on prices. Buyers can also force suppliers to accommodate them in relation to other conditions, such as delivery schedules, quality and types of products or services. In addition, buyers can pass off to the suppliers much of the risks in relation to overproduction, natural losses, and variations in cyclical demand.
