A monopsony is a market in which only one buyer faces many sellers.

Example sentence

The monopsony of ACME’s large supermarket chain poses a challenge for small local producers who cannot meet the requirements ACME places on its suppliers.

Comment

A monopsony is an instance of imperfect competition and often leads to a drop in prices. It is the counterpoint to a monopoly, in which only one seller faces many buyers. Indeed, it is sometimes referred to as the buyer’s monopoly. The monopsonist is often the state, e.g. as a buyer of military production.

Poznámka

Monopson je příkladem nedokonalé konkurence a často vede k poklesu cen. Je protikladem monopolu, kde jeden prodejce stojí oproti mnoha kupujícím. Proto se také monopson někdy označuje jako nákupní monopol. Monopsonistou je často stát, například coby nákupce vojenské produkce.
