A monopoly occurs when one supplier controls an entire market.

Comment

A monopoly is an extreme case of a seller’s market. As such, it presents a substantial risk to consumers due to the absence of competition. Anti-trust laws have therefore been established to prevent the occurrence of monopolies and other such positions which skew or endanger competition. The inverse situation, in which the market is controlled by only one buyer, is termed monopsony. A situation in which the market is controlled by a few large suppliers is referred to as an oligopoly.  Certain industries characterized by high fixed costs, such as public utilities, are prone to the creation of natural monopolies.

Poznámka

Monopol je extrémním případem trhu prodávajícího. Jako takový představuje podstatné riziko pro spotřebitele kvůli absenci hospodářské soutěže. Proto byly ustanoveny antimonopolní zákony, které brání vzniku monopolů a dalších pozic, které hospodářskou soutěž pokřivují nebo ohrožují. Opačnou situací, ve které je trh ovládán jen jedním kupujícím, se nazývá monopson. Situace, ve které trh ovládá několik velkých dodavatelů, se nazývá oligopol. Některá odvětví vyznačující se vysokými fixními náklady, například veřejné služby, jsou náchylná k vytváření přirozených monopolů.
