Margin of safety is the difference between the intrinsic value of a security and its purchase price.
Though the investment manager noticed the share price of Universal Robots had decreased to USD 57, about equal to its estimated value, she decided to wait until it fell to around USD 48 before investing in order to have a reasonable margin of safety.
Also referred to as safety margin, the term was coined by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, pioneers of value investing. According to this investment strategy, one is advised to buy stock when its price is lower than its intrinsic value so that the investor has a margin of safety as protection against unexpected circumstances and errors in valuation.
