In computing, legacy system refers to outdated hardware and/or software that is still in use.

Comment

As technology advances, every hardware and software becomes outdated over time. Legacy system refers to older technology that is often incompatible with newer systems and applications. Companies often run into difficulties when deciding about changing computer systems for newer ones, and for a number of reasons: switching to a new system may be expensive, migration from an obsolete programming language may be difficult and some data might be lost, the old system may still work satisfactorily and the benefits of changing it are not clear, the system needs to be available continuously and it is difficult to take it out of operation even for a short time, among others. Nevertheless, failing to replace old systems may also be dangerous, as, for instance, no security patches are issued for old operating systems and over time there will be no experts able to maintain such a system.

S technologickým pokrokem každý hardware a software časem zastarává. Jako legacy systém označujeme starší technologie, která je často nekompatibilní s novějšími systémy a aplikacemi. Rozhodování o výměně starých počítačových systémů za novější je pro firmy často oříškem, a to z řady důvodů: přechod na nový systém může být drahý, přechod ze zastaralého programovacího jazyka může být náročný a některá data mohou být v tomto procesu ztracena, starý systém může stále uspokojivě fungovat a přínosy jeho změny jsou nejasné, systém musí být k dispozici neustále a je těžké jej vyřadit z provozu i na krátkou dobu atd. Nicméně, nevyměnit staré systémy může být také nebezpečné, protože pro staré operační systémy se například nevydávají bezpečnostní záplaty a časem nebudou k dispozici odborníci schopní systém udržovat.
