Internal competition is competition among employees within a given company.
The promotion policy at Thomson, Bertrand & Williams was amended to reduce internal competition and so that the employees will focus on productive endeavors rather than on trying to outcompete their peers.
Internal competition may result either intentionally or unintentionally in response to procedures, practices, and attitudes established and existing within a company. Up or out is an example of a working environment that is highly competitive internally. Even though it may seem that competitiveness among employees should boost productivity, this potential benefit is typically more than outweighed by the negative effects of reduced collaboration, workplace conflicts, and disagreeable qualities of the corporate culture.
