A hedge is a financial transaction made to reduce a certain risk in relation to an investment, activity, asset or liability.

Comment

Since all investments carry various types of risk, investors try to hedge against these risks. If a risk event occurs, the hedge reduces the loss incurred. If, however, the event does not occur, the real return from that investment is reduced by the cost of the hedge. Many derivatives, such as futures and options, are often used for hedging purposes. Investment funds which have highly sophisticated risk-management practices are called hedge funds.
