A heat map is a graphic representation of a variable on a plane where different areas are colored to reflect the value at that location.

Heat maps are commonly used for, and named after, thermal imaging, where the highest temperatures on a map or an image are, for example, displayed in red, the lowest in purple, and the spectrum of “hot” versus “cold” colors in between passing through yellow to green and then blue. Heat maps are also used for displaying such non-temperature values as elevation, precipitation, financial information, probabilities, and gene expression. Most commonly in business, they are used in web analytics to visualize data from observing user actions on websites. There, the areas of a page most clicked or viewed by the users are displayed in red, whereas unattractive parts are in “cold” colors.

Poznámka

Teplotní mapy se běžně využívají a jsou pojmenované podle tepelného zobrazování, kde jsou nejvyšší teploty na mapě nebo na snímku zobrazeny například v červené, nejnižší ve fialové, a spektrum „teplých“ a „studených“ barev mezitím přechází od žluté přes zelenou a modrou. Teplotní mapy se používají také pro zobrazení neteplotních hodnot jako je nadmořská výška, srážky, finanční informace, pravděpodobnosti a genová exprese. V byznysu se nejčastěji využívají ve webové analytice pro vizualizaci dat z pozorování činnosti uživatelů na webových stránkách. V takovém případě se oblasti na stránce, na které uživatelé nejvíce klikají nebo dívají, zobrazují červeně, zatímco neatraktivní části jsou ve „studených“ barvách.
