Headline inflation is a measure of inflation based on changes in the prices of goods, including a broad basket of consumer goods.
The economist explained that although this year’s crop failure drove up headline inflation, core inflation has remained approximately unchanged.
Headline inflation’s inclusion of the highly volatile food and energy prices and the fact that it is not adjusted for seasonality makes it highly susceptible to short-term price fluctuations. It is nevertheless widely used by many central banks, including the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. Headline inflation may be contrasted with core inflation, which excludes certain volatile items within the consumer price index and is adjusted for seasonal effects. Even though headline inflation more accurately reflects the near-term change in the prices that people actually pay, core inflation may be more representative in describing inflation over the long term.

Celkovou inflaci lze postavit do protikladu s jádrovou inflací, která nezahrnuje určité volatilní položky indexu spotřebitelských cen a je očištěna o sezónní vlivy. Ačkoli celková inflace může přesněji odrážet krátkodobou změnu cen, které lidé skutečně platí, jádrová inflace může být reprezentativnějším obrazem dlouhodobé inflace.
