A generic drug is an unbranded drug with the same effects as a more expensive original drug.
ACME did not succeed in prolonging the patent protection of RunRun, thus enabling a range of generic drugs to compete with it on the market.
Because original drugs often enjoy patent protection, competing companies cannot produce their own alternatives as long as this protection lasts. When such patent protection ends, however, competitors are free to introduce their own drugs with identical or biosimilar composition. Because competitors need not spend as much money on R&D, they can set substantially lower prices. Companies may use various strategies to prolong patent protection and postpone the onset of generic competing drugs, such as evergreening and product hopping.
