Freeware is software that can be downloaded free of charge.
Instead of paying for an MS Office license, I am using OpenOffice because it is freeware.
Although freeware is free of charge, its use at no cost is usually allowed only under certain conditions. Many authors offer their software for free only for noncommercial purposes or permit its downloading solely to a personal computer. Some freeware is available for free only to certain people or organizations, like students or charities. Many companies distribute simple versions of their programs at no charge in order to attract people or companies to buy paid versions that have more functionalities or do not display advertisements. Freeware differs from open source software in that the owner of free software usually does not publish the source code and does not permit others to change it.

Mnoho firem distribuuje jednodušší verze svých programů zdarma proto, aby nalákali lidi nebo firmy ke koupi placených verzí, které mají více funkcionalit nebo nezobrazují reklamu. Freeware se liší od open source softwaru tím, že vlastník obvykle nedává k dispozici zdrojový kód a nepovoluje ostatním, aby ho měnili.
