A facelift is an update of a product or service involving only cosmetic changes.
Many people had been excited by introduction of the new data tariff from ComTel, but it soon turned out that this was essentially just a facelift of the old program.
The term is derived from the surgical procedure that is intended to give a more youthful look to aged faces. It is commonly used in the automotive industry, where it especially entails minor visual changes to the car’s front end. The concept is also used in other products, such as to update soda packaging to appeal to a younger audience or facilitate expansion into a new country. Facelifts also can be used for legal reasons, most especially to prevent a loss of patent protection. This is termed evergreening.
