Dry hole /

Dry hole

Business Term of the Day

Definition

The term dry hole refers to an unsuccessful business venture.

Example sentence

Despite my many successful investments over the years, I still hit a dry hole every once and a while where I just have to write the whole thing off as lost money.

Comment

The term derives from the field of oil and gas exploration, where it refers to a drilled well that does not produce oil or gas sufficient for commercial viability. Investments that are not currently profitable but still have potential for profitability would not usually be called dry holes.

Definice
