Depression /

Deprese

Business Term of the Day

Definition

A depression is a long-term period of severe economic downturn.

Example sentence

Several economists have pointed out that government intervention may be the only way to prevent the current recession from snowballing into a depression.

Comment

Depression is part of the business cycle and is more serious than a recession (which usually precedes a depression). There are various conflicting definitions of how long and how severe a period of economic downturn must be to constitute a depression, although generally it is measured in years. Depressions are also accompanied by deflation and high unemployment, which impede economic recovery. Common examples of depressions are The Great Depression in the 1930s and the current Greek Depression.

Definice
