Core inflation is a measure of inflation based on changes in the prices of certain commodities, not including food, fuels, and certain regulated goods.
The economist explained that although this year’s crop failure had driven up headline inflation, core inflation has remained relatively subdued.
Core inflation may be more representative for describing long-term price-level changes than is headline inflation. Headline inflation also is based on changes in prices of goods and services, but, in contrast to core inflation, it includes as well such highly price-volatile items as food and energy. In contrast to headline inflation, core inflation is adjusted for seasonality.
