A consortium is a contractually bound group of entities collaborating in pursuit of a common objective.
The Unicode standard of electronic encoding is developed by the Unicode Consortium, whose members include Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, IBM, Google, Oracle, Yahoo, and SAP.
In addition to its being used in reference to the collaborating group, the term consortium refers to the formal agreement itself. Consortia (alternative plural consortiums) are typically made up of companies, but they may also comprise individuals, countries, and other organizations. Every member of a consortium is bound only to the extent stipulated in its contract. The member remains independent in its business operations and has no say over those operations of any other member that are not related to the consortium. Consortia are often used in the nonprofit sector, but also in business. Even competitors may form consortia in certain areas of common interest, such as to create uniform standards that benefit the broader public. Doing so creates an example of what is sometimes termed coopetition.
