Cash burn rate is the amount of money per month which that a new company consuming during the period prior to the time when it will earn sufficient funds from its business operations to cover its operating expenses.

Cash burn rate is in fact a negative cash flow, a pace at which a company uses up money. A newly established usually uses money from investors or money borrowed from a bank to fund its operations. The cash burn rate is therefore used also to calculate how much time a company has before it must start generating enough of its own revenues to pay for all its costs – or go back to the investors to seek additional start-up funding. A company is expected to begin generating income gradually and in this way reduce its monthly cash burn rate. For example, if a company has operating costs of $50,000 per month but it generates $10,000 in revenues, then its net burn rate is $40,000.

Poznámka

Cash burn rate je v zásadě negativní cash flow, tedy rychlost, kterou firma spotřebovává peníze. Nově založený podnik obvykle využívá k zaplacení svého provozu peníze od investorů nebo peníze půjčené z banky. Cash burn rate je proto používán také k výpočtu toho, kolik času má firma na to, aby začala vytvářet vlastní příjmy dostatečné k zaplacení všech svých nákladů – jinak musí žádat od investorů dodatečnou podporu. Očekává se, že firma postupně začne generovat příjmy a takto bude snižovat svůj měsíční burn rate. Například firma, jejíž měsíční provozní dosahují 50 tisíc dolarů, ale 10 tisíc dolarů měsíčně vydělá, má čistý cash burn rate 40 tisíc dolarů.
