The next level beyond carbon neutral, carbon negative means that an individual or organization removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than that person or entity emits into it.

Microsoft announced that the company will be carbon negative by 2030, moreover that it will compensate by 2050 for all carbon emissions it has ever created since Microsoft’s establishment in 1975.

Comment

As more and more individuals and organizations make very serious efforts to mitigate climate change, there recently has come to the fore this concept to take these efforts a step further. Instead of just offsetting the emissions produced (the carbon neutrality concept), the objective is to remove more CO₂ from the atmosphere than is emitted into it not only by the likes of supporting and using renewable energy, producing less waste, and make buildings sustainable but also by taking such steps as planting trees, incorporating biochar into soil, and using carbon capture and storage technologies to remove CO₂ directly from the atmosphere.

Další úroveň uhlíkové neutrality, uhlíková negativita, znamená, že jednotlivec nebo organizace odstraní z atmosféry více oxidu uhličitého, než do ní vypustí.

Společnost Microsoft oznámila, že do roku 2030 bude uhlíkově negativní a krom toho ještě do roku 2050 vykompenzuje všechny emise uhlíku, které kdy vytvořila od svého založení v roce 1975.

Poznámka

S tím, jak stále více jednotlivců i organizací bere snahy o zmírnění změny klimatu velmi vážně, se dostal v poslední době do popředí koncept, který tyto snahy posouvá ještě o krok dál. Namísto pouhého vyrovnávání vyprodukovaných emisí (koncept uhlíkové neutrality) je cílem odstranit z atmosféry více CO₂, než se do ní vypouští, a to nejen například podporou a využíváním obnovitelných zdrojů energie, produkcí menšího množství odpadu, přeměnou budov na udržitelné stavby, ale také sázením stromů, zapracováváním biouhlu do půdy a používáním technologií zachycování a ukládání uhlíku k odstranování CO₂ přímo z atmosféry.
