Within strategic management, benchmarking is the procedure of identifying standard best practices and comparing them with the processes and performance of a given organization. The procedure involves choosing a specific process to examine, selecting proper performance metrics, identifying proper comparisons, determining the best examples, and endeavoring to match one’s own processes and performance with these practices. Within computing, benchmarking involves measuring the performance of a program or piece of hardware with a standard set of tests. When standard tests are used for products or services outside computing, it is known as technical or product benchmarking. Within finance, benchmarks such as broad market indices are used to measure the performance of an investment or investment manager. Benchmark can also be used to designate a reference for a variety of products, such as a benchmark crude describing the reference price for crude oil. The term derives from marks surveyors would make in stone to make a bench to place an instrument in a specific position to which they could return over time.

Ve strategickém řízení pojem „benchmarking“ označuje postup identifikace standardu osvědčených postupů a jeho porovnání s procesy a výkonem dané organizace. Tento postup zahrnuje výběr určitého procesu k prozkoumání, volbu správných výkonnostních metrik, identifikace organizací k porovnání, stanovení nejlepších příkladů a snahu o to, aby procesy a výkon dané organizace dosáhly této úrovně. V oblasti výpočetní techniky benchmarking zahrnuje měření výkonu programu nebo kusu hardwaru standardní sadou testů. Když se standardní testování používá pro produkty nebo služby mimo oblast výpočetní techniky, označuje se jako technický nebo produktový benchmarking. V oblasti financí jsou využívána měřítka jako široké tržní indexy pro měření výkonu investice nebo investičního manažera. Měřítka je také možné použít ke stanovení referenčních bodů pro celou řadu produktů, například benchmarkovou ropu, která popisuje referenční cenu ropy. Termín benchmark se odvozuje od anglického slova pro nivelační značku v kameni, s pomocí které si zeměměřiči sestavovali lavici pro své přístroje do určité polohy, ke které se mohli časem vrátit.
