Alternative finance refers to recently developed financial instruments outside of the traditional financial system.

Developed in late 20th century, these types of financing rely on technology in an attempt to cut intermediaries (e.g. banks and capital markets) out of the investment process and thereby enable companies to more quickly and conveniently raise seed capital or other necessary funds. Examples of alternative finance range from already well-established models, such as cooperation with venture capitalists or angel investors, to more innovative approaches, such as peer-to-peer lending, crowdfunding, crowdfinancing, invoice trading, or use of cryptocurrencies. Alternative finance is primarily used by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) such as technology startups, although it has also been used in various other fields such as philanthropy, research, and real estate.

Tyto typy financování, vyvinuté koncem 20. století, spoléhají na technologii ve snaze vyřadit prostředníky (např. banky a kapitálové trhy) z procesu investování a tím společnostem umožnit rychleji a pohodlněji získat počáteční kapitál nebo jiné potřebné prostředky. Příklady alternativního financování sahají od již dobře zavedených modelů jako spolupráce s venture kapitalisty nebo andělskými investory k inovativnějším přístupům jako  peer-to-peer půjčky, crowdfunding, crowdfinancing, obchodování s fakturami nebo použití kryptoměn. Alternativní financování využívají primárně malé a středně velké podniky (SME), například technologické startupy, ačkoli již bylo použito v různých dalších oblastech jako filantropie, výzkum a nemovitosti.
