Micromanagement /

Mikromanagement

Business Term of the Day

Definition

The term micromanagement refers to an approach to management wherein the manager seeks to control every detail of his or her subordinates’ activities and thus may negatively affect their productivity.

Example sentence

After a new project manager joined RBC Industries, Richard left his longtime position in the team because he was unhappy with the micromanagement of his new supervisor.

Comment

The term micromanagement typically has a negative connotation. Micromanaging often affects work morale, discourages employees and, in the long run, undermines the performance of a team, department, or even an entire company. A micromanager does not leave enough space for his or her subordinates to act independently, constantly checks and usually criticizes the chosen procedures, and insists upon frequent and detailed reporting. A micromanager typically expends unnecessary energy and time to check details, is unable to meet deadlines and to see the bigger picture, and therefore might fail in the long run. Such people are at risk, too, of occupational burnout. A manager might micromanage his or her team subconsciously but may be able to fix the problem if he or she becomes aware of it and makes a conscious effort to change. Inexperienced managers, for example, can easily succumb to micromanagement.

Definice

Poté, co do RBC Industries nastoupila nová projektová manažerka, opustil Richard svou mnohaletou pozici v týmu, protože byl nespokojený s mikromanagementem své nové nadřízené.

Mikromanažer nenechává svým podřízeným dostatek prostoru na samostatnou činnost, neustále kontroluje a obvykle i kritizuje zvolené postupy a vyžaduje časté a detailní hlášení.
