The phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid” refers to blindly accepting everything one is told regarding a given subject, including dangerous deceits and manipulation.
Jenny and I were always joking about the multi-level marketing scheme she had joined, but more recently she just becomes defensive and takes offense whenever I bring it up. I’m afraid she’s started drinking the Kool-Aid.
The origin of this phrase is in fact quite grisly. It refers to the 1978 mass suicide and murder of the Peoples Temple cult in Guyana, where members drank (and were forced to drink) a grape-flavored drink laced with poison, resulting in the deaths of 918 people. Although it is debated whether Kool-Aid (a powdered drink mix popular in the United States) was in fact used, or whether it was a drink mix of another brand, the phrase stuck.

S Jenny jsme vždycky žertovali o tom schématu víceúrovňového marketingu, ke kterému se přidala, ale nedávno začala být defenzivní a uráží se, kdykoli ho zmíním. Bojím se, že jim to začala žrát i s navijákem.
Původ této fráze je ve skutečnosti velmi ponurý. Odkazuje na masovou sebevraždu a vraždu členů kultu Chrám lidu v Guyaně, jehož členové vypili (a byli přinuceni vypít) nápoj s hroznovou příchutí s vmíchaným jedem, což vyústilo v úmrtí 918 lidí. Ačkoli se debatuje, jestli byl skutečně použit nápoj Kool-Aid (rozpustný prášek pro přípravu nápoje populární ve Spojených státech) nebo jestli to byl nápoj v prášku jiné značky, tato fráze se zažila.
