Smurfing is the practice of breaking financial transactions into smaller amounts to avoid monitoring.
Mr. Johan is facing money laundering charges for an attempt to smurf USD 110,000 by depositing the money in various banks over several hours, apparently hoping to then withdraw the funds from within his home country.
Also referred to as structuring, this practice is used for such illegal purposes as money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. Under Czech law, any transaction exceeding 15,000 EUR in value must be reported to financial authorities while identifying the parties to that transaction. Under U.S. law, this threshold is $10,000. Thus smurfing involves the creation of smaller transactions below such limit and thereby avoids the respective reporting obligation. For this reason, smurfing is illegal in many jurisdictions. A person performing such operations is sometimes called a smurf.

Pan Johan čelí obviněním z praní špinavých peněz za pokus o šmoulování vkladem 110 000 dolarů do různých bank během několika hodin, pravděpodobně v naději, že je bude moci vybrat ze své země.
Také se nazývá strukturování nebo smurfing. Tato praxe se využívá pro různé ilegální účely jako praní špinavých peněz, daňové úniky a podvody. Podle českých zákonů platí, že transakci, jejíž hodnota přesahuje částku 15 000 EUR, je nutno ohlásit finančním institucím a identifikovat účastníky obchodu. Podle zákonů USA je tato hranice 10 000 USD. Šmoulování proto zahrnuje vytváření menších transakcí pod tímto limitem a tak se vyhýbá příslušné vykazovací povinnosti. Z toho důvodu je šmoulování v řadě jurisdikcí nelegální. Osoba, která tyto operace provádí, se někdy nazývá šmoula.
